Today the recipe for one of the simplest and most loved international cocktails: Cuba libre, in the original recipe codified by theIBA, the International bartenders association, the international association that brings together bartenders from all over the world. The recipe is of an embarrassing simplicity, but I recommend you to weigh all the ingredients, as you see in this very short VIDEO TUTORIAL. Often called amicably “rum and coca”, Cuba libre is a cocktail of medium alcohol content: three basic ingredients. Cuban rum, American Coca Cola and Lime Juice. The doses are very precise, but it is the lime juice that differentiates rum and Coca from Cuba libre. Rum and coca does not include lime juice, which is instead fundamental in the recipe of Cuba Libre.
Cuba libre: the history of the cocktail
Behind the combination cuban rum and American coca cola hides a particular historical moment. The most accredited version matches two dates: in 1886 John Pemberton, a pharmacist from Philadelphia, devised Coca Cola as a tonic potion. This drink arrived in Cuba in the years when the island gained independence from Spain (1898) thanks to the help of the United States.
Coca Cola, sweet and carbonated, began to replace the ingredient that was used in Cuba, or caramel made with water and sugar, just in the last years of 1800 and this drink born from the collaboration between Cubans and Americans, was born to the cry of “Por Cuba Libre!”, “for Free Cuba!”
Cuba libre is prepared directly in the glass, a tall glass (highball): the only other ingredients besides light rum and Coca are lots of ice , lime juice and slices of lime to garnish. The suitable rum is Cuban rum, amber and fragrant.
